Radiation Therapy (Radiation Oncology)
Treating Cancer with Precision
Radiation Oncology relies on a very sophisticated technology, advanced therapies and highly skilled professionals to deliver focused beams of radiation that treat tumors and other abnormalities. It is an extremely precise science, requiring great expertise and state-of-the-art capabilities.
And that’s precisely what we offer in the radiation oncology department at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center (HLRCC).
At par with the most modern radiation oncology departments in the world, the radiation oncology department at HLRCC endeavors to provide the most experienced professionals, latest technology and the most advanced therapies for cancer patients. Today, those efforts have evolved into the finest Radiation Oncology Services in the region.
Most impressively, HLRCC was the first cancer treatment facility in the state of Connecticut to offer the revolutionary MLC-based dynamic Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (or dIMRT). In IMRT, a sophisticated treatment planning computer generates a custom-designed treatment plan, and an advanced linear accelerator generates hundreds of beamlets of radiation that can be precisely focused to destroy or limit the growth of tumor. A ground-breaking and sophisticated approach in precise and quick delivery of radiation treatment to our patients, IMRT has now set the highest standards in treatment delivery to our patients.
Further, and as a first clinical site, not only in Connecticut but in the New England region, HLRCC decided to depart from the simplistic "skin mark" localization technique.  Instead, internal markers, named the "ACCULOC" technique was implemented to localize the target daily before each treatment.  Because of the incredible precision of IMRT, the intensity of the beams can be adjusted and controlled, focusing the highest amount of radiation on the tumor, and the lowest dose to the surrounding tissue. That means fewer complications or side effects that sometimes accompany radiation therapy.
Other-state-of-the-art technology at HLRCC includes:
  • An advanced generation of computer-controlled linear accelerator (also known as a “linac”). Our linac produces 2 photon and 5 electron energies and delivers the radiation in a reliable manner, verified on a daily basis.
  • A modern wide-bore CT scanner dedicated for radiation oncology imaging.
  • Millennium multi-leaf collimator (MLC): collimates, or shapes, complex radiation fields.
  • aSi Portal Vision (PV): Monitors proper patient position in a few seconds! The digital state-of-the-art “camera,” with robotic arms, has replaced the widely used (and cumbersome) procedure of using portal films, still employed in most cancer centers!
  • Record and Verify System: Minimizes human error by making sure planned and delivered treatment parameters match.
  • Complete prostate seed implant procedure, using the most effective techniques!
