| Positron Emission Tomography (P.E.T.) is a unique diagnostic tool, which, unlike more traditional anatomical imaging, assesses chemical and metabolic changes in the body. Patients are given a dose of a tracer containing materials that are normally used in one's body, like sugar, proteins and oxygen. Its ability to detect cancers earlier, before structural changes occur, and when cancers are most treatable, has put P.E.T. scanning at the forefront of cancer care. |
P.E.T. scans give doctors an early visualization of cancers and more accurately stage the disease. Doctors now use P.E.T. to gain pre-surgical information, to examine a patient's response to therapy, and to identify metastases or accurately stage a cancer. This non-invasive way to study tumor processes is now used to detect and stage colorectal, lung, melanoma, lymphoma, head and neck, breast, esophageal cancers, as well as recurrent brain tumors and myocardial viability. | How does P.E.T. work? |
| After your injection of the tracer, you will wait about an hour to distribute the dose throughout your body. For the scan, you will lie down on an exam table as the scanner gathers images for analysis. After the exam, you should feel fine. There are no known side effects from the glucose material; however, if you have a heart scan, you may feel flushed afterwards. |
| Things to do to prepare |
-
Let your physician know if you are pregnant or think that you may be, or if you are a nursing mother.
-
Tell your physician if you are a diabetic.
-
Avoid all beverages with caffeine and sugar prior to your exam.
-
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before your exam.
-
Take any prescribed medications on the day of your test, unless your physician indicates otherwise.
-
Wear loose and comfortable clothing.
-
Arrive 30 minutes prior to your exam.
-
You will be asked to remove watches, jewelry, hearing aids, glasses, and wallets.
-
Your radioactive glucose is individually prepared and is effective for a very limited time; as a result, it is imperative that you are on time for your appointment.
-
Appointments must be cancelled 24 to 48 hours prior, since the tracer dose is individually ordered and very expensive. |
